Write Marathi in Windows – विंडोज मध्ये मराठी लिहा !

There are many methods available for typing in Marathi. The script used to write Marathi is called Devanagari script. This is the same script used to write Hindi as well. Many softwares like Shree Lipi, ISM, Baraha etc. are available to accomplish this which allow us to type using custom keyboard layouts. But many a times we find ourselves unfamiliar with these layouts and it becomes a tedious process. Also the fonts used by these softwares are proprietary and we have to reconvert them to Unicode after typing. Unicode is a standard for fonts that is available across all computing platforms. So if a font is in Unicode, its bound to be readable on 99% of devices available today.

Google provides us with transliteration facility, via which we can type Marathi in English script and it will automatically convert it to Unicode Devanagari characters. This can be done online at Google Input Tools. Click on “Try it Out” to see it action. Select Marathi from the language selection drop-down box.

Also be sure to try of variations of the English spelling, if you are not getting the correct Marathi spelling conversion. Try to spell in English as you say the word, and not how you write it. Example Jai becomes जी and Jay becomes जय. Play with a little variations till you get the hang of it. Once you do it’s a very natural to type. After finishing typing you can copy the text and use it any website or software that supports Unicode characters.

Now Google also provides the same functionality for chrome browser, desktops & Android. This even works offline, which is great news for people with unreliable Internet connections. Download the desktop(win) version and start typing in Marathi today.

P.S.: If you are using Windows 8, once you install the software, you can use the shortcut [Win Key + Space Bar] to switch between English and Marathi keyboards.

जय हिंद, जय महाराष्ट्र !
